The return of Gearface was also a welcome treat, particularly after Rick gave him a grotesque beat-down. The fact that the whole thing was little more than a throwaway gag shows how much effort the writers put into even the little elements. The idea of a virtual reality game that forces you to live out another person's identity for the sole purpose of seeing how long you can survive is pretty twisted. The arcade game Roy was a definite standout. We may never know if Rick and Morty retrieved the right Jerry.Īgain, the main conflict was a relatively straightforward fugitive chase, but it crammed in more than enough colorful sights and bizarre characters to keep things interesting. The resolution to this subplot was great as well. Jerry's time at the daycare was very amusing as he transitioned from being captivated at its many mundane forms of entertainment to escaping into the wide, scary city outside to resigning himself to the idea that the outside world just isn't meant for Jerry-kind. Too many episodes simply showcase a completely separate misadventure for Jerry and/or Beth, one whose main purpose is to provide a little down-to-earth conflict to offset Rick and Morty's cosmic shenanigans. I appreciated how the Jerry subplot was integrated into the main storyline for a change.
Jerry, meanwhile, found himself dumped off at a daycare center where all the Jerrys of the multiverse are stored to keep them out of trouble. Rick wanted to wile away his hours at an intergalactic arcade called Bits and Chitz, but instead he and Morty found themselves escorting a fugitive, sentient gas cloud back to its people with half the Galactic Federation on their tail. The plot itself was pretty simple as far as this show goes. And even if it wasn't quite as clever or far-out as "A Rickle in Time" last week, it proved to be a consistently entertaining adventure for Rick, Morty and poor Jerry.
It was a fitting choice, as "Mortynight Run" was very much a Morty-centric episode. This is the first (and so far only) episode of Rick and Morty named after the latter character.
